"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and
to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
If you want to, and only if you want to; read this paragraph.
It's the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
In these modern times of global internet and cellular phones
that rule our lives, this Amendment (and the one I will discuss next week, and
several thereafter) are documents that were the foundation of the formation of
our country, two hundred and twenty-nine years ago. They are not outdated, and they
are not disposable. They are the reason that our Republic can stand as the greatest
of all time…and the reason that it can fall, just like ancient Rome, in a very
short time because they are ignored and dismembered to the point of worthlessness.
I welcome your comments for discussion. Why is this amendment important
to you? What does it mean to you?
You’ll get my answer, and the next topic, next
Sunday.

So many believe this to be license to say whatever crap may fall from their lips and they suffer no consequences. So many scream, "But I have freedom of speech! You can't shut me down!" Yes, 'they' can. What the amendment means is you won't get arrested for saying what you want, although there are exceptions to that: You can't threaten another person's life, you can't yell "Fire" in a crowded theater. The amendment does not protect the speaker from consequences. If you walk into your workplace and call your boss and/or coworkers all manner of horrible things, your first amendment rights won't protect you from getting fired. But, with certain exceptions, you won't be arrested.
